Angeliq is a hormone replacement therapy that contains estradiol and drospirenone. It is used to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances in postmenopausal women. Like any medication, Angeliq does have potential side effects that should be considered before starting treatment.
The most common side effects of Angeliq are headaches, breast tenderness, nausea, weight gain, fluid retention, and mood changes. Headaches often occur early in treatment but may resolve over time. Breast tenderness is also common but usually diminishes as therapy continues. Nausea is most likely to occur when first starting Angeliq. Gaining a few pounds is not uncommon due to fluid retention effects of estrogen. Mood changes like anxiety, irritability or depression can happen with hormone changes.
More serious but less frequent side effects of Angeliq include gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Those with a history of gallbladder disease may experience worsening symptoms on Angeliq. Estrogen can cause fluid retention which may worsen existing high blood pressure or lead to its development. Both estrogen and drospirenone raise the risk of blood clots. Those at highest risk include smokers over age 35, those with clotting disorders, and the obese. Angeliq slightly increases heart attack risk in the first year of use. Stroke risk is also elevated. Long-term use of estrogen without progesterone raises the risk of endometrial cancer. Angeliq contains progesterone which helps mitigate this risk. However some studies have suggested combination hormone therapy for over 5 years may still increase risk.
To help minimize side effects, doctors recommend using the lowest effective dose of Angeliq for the shortest time needed. Getting regular health screenings, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake can also help reduce risks. Inform your doctor of any personal or family history of blood clots, heart disease, breast cancer or other hormonally-influenced conditions. Report any new, persistent or worsening symptoms promptly. Angeliq is contraindicated in those with liver impairment, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, known or suspected pregnancy, and certain cancers. Interactions with other drugs are possible so advise your provider of all medications.
Despite potential side effects, Angeliq remains an effective option for relieving menopausal symptoms when used appropriately. Having an honest discussion with your healthcare provider about your personal risk factors and medical history is important when weighing the benefits and risks. Get regular follow-up and screening while using Angeliq. Be alert for signs of new or worsening problems. With proper precautions, monitoring and guidance, Angeliq can safely provide women needed relief from disruptive menopausal symptoms.
